Fitting an extractor fan - remember to switch the electricity off at the mains before working on electrical circuits! A kitchen extractor fan can be installed by installing a fused connection unit at wall level, and running a cable from the fused unit to anoutlet next to the extractor fan. However, if you want to fit a bathroom extractor fan, then the connection must be made via a ceiling-mounted pull cord. The fan wi;; then come on when you swith on the light. It is imperative to fit a fan isolator switch in series to the light. Also, the extractor fan cannot be within reach of a shower, sink or bath and if it is directly overhead a bath or shower then it must be a low voltage extractor fan.

Condensation is formed in a house when warm, moist air (eg from a bath or cooking in a kitchen) hits a cold surface (eg a window or outisde wall). Thus an extractor fan is needed to let the moist air escape outside. Condensation leads to mould on the walls - which is unsightly and contributes to asthma and other respiratory diseases.
To control condensation make sure the moisture in your house is balanced by adequate ventilation. Extractor fans can solve the problem of condensation if you fit them it the right places. Extractor fans are essential in kitchens, bathrooms and showers - wherever a lot of moisture is being produced. If you fit a bathroom extractor fan or a kitchen extractor fan or an extractor fan in a shower room then you will notice a huge difference in condensation.
If you are installing a bathroom fan then use one with a pull-cord switch. There are two main types of extractor fans, although there are a great range of styles, shapes and sizes on the market.
Axial-flow extractor fans have flat, propeller-like blades (only this type can be fitted in a window), and centrifugal extractor fans have a long, cylindrical impeller. There are models of either type designed for mounting in a wall or a ceiling. Only axial-flow types include models designed for mounting in a window. If you are fitting a ceiling fan then you will need to install a duct above the ceiling to discharge to the outside. If you are fitting a window extractor fan then position the fan as high up in the window as possible.
