Information and guide to hot water cylinders uk :-

Direct hot water cylinder are for use with circulators because the water is heated directly - cylinder direct hot water.
One-circuit hot-water cylinders - Some older houses have solid-fuel boilers or back boilers, the cylinder water is heated direct by circulation through the boiler. There isn't a feed-and-expansion cistern and water is fed from the cold water cistern into the the cylinder and subsequently into the boiler. The hot water rises to the top and is drawn off from the top of the hot water cylinder. The main disadvantage of a direct heated cylinder is that especially in an area of hard-water area, the boiler, the cylinder and the pipes become covered in scale, which gradually causes the system to become furred up and less efficient. It can lead to corrosion and leaks. Central-heating radiators cannot be supplied from a direct hot water cylinder.

Indirect hot water cylinders are for use with any type of central heating system. If you are using your boiler for central heating as well as hot water then you must have an indirect (two circuit) system. In an indirect hot water cylinder, corrosion and scale are not such a problem. The water from the central heating goes through a coil of pipe within the cylinder (giving its heat to the water in the cylinder) but doesn't mix with the water in the cylinder - cylinder indirect hot water.

Unvented Cylinder - This is the same as an indirect hot water cylinder except there isn't a header tank, and it's connected directly to the main water supply giving mains water pressure to the hot taps and showers.

    Hot-water cylinder insulation
Insulation jackets for hot water cylinders are for sale here at trade prices. You can save a lot of wasted heat (and therefore wasted money) by fitting a new insulation jacket to your hot water cylinder. They are a range of sizes to fit different size hot water cylinders and provide optimum heat retention. The sizes are measured by the vertical height of the hot water tank to the top of the round dome and the overall diameter. Two common sizes are 900mm x 450mm and 1050mm x 450mm.

Most hot water cylinder jackets are made up of a number of segments held together by string tied around the hot water cylinder. Follow the supplier's instructions for fixing the jacket onto the hot water cylinder. You should smooth the jacket down over the hot water cylinder but don't apply too much pressure in case you reduce the effectiveness of the insulation by compressing it. Tie one of the belts around the jacket and secure the second belt near the bottom of the tank, loosly. Make sure that the sections of the jacket totally cover the tank with no spaces. Ensure that the electric cables and cap of an electric immersion heater are not covered.

Replacement hot water cylinders are available with foam insulation applied in the factory, these are more effective than installing an insulating jacket so a there is no need to fit new hot water cylinders with an insulating cylinder jacket. But if you need a cylinder jacket then there are two different sizes available here.

Immersion heaters - A hot water cylinder can also be heated by an electric immersion heater. Approximately 1kW of heat is needed for every 45 litres of water, so a 136 litre hot water cylinder needs a 3kW immersion heater. Immersion heaters can be used with a boiler, supplying additional hot water. An immersion heater should not be set above 140 F in a hard-water area. Above this temperature scale starts to be deposited. In soft-water areas, the imersion heater can be set up to 70 C (158 F). There are a selection of immersion heaters at discount prices available here. All the immersion heaters have thermostats and there are ones particularly suitable for hard water areas which come with a 2 year guarantee. This is the site for reliable immersion heaters.

Central heating radiators will last for years. Even Victorian style radiators can be flushed out and reused. Hot water cylinders can connect to any style of central heating radiators. You can buy all kinds of plumbing supplies here and also central heating boilers, valves, central heating pumps, programmers, central heating thermostats and all kinds of central heating radiators.
