The most common light switch, is called a single pole switch by electricians and hardware dealers. An electric light switch that operates hall lights from both ends of a hall is called a two-way switch (or a three-way switch if it operates from three points).

    How to install Light Switches

There are two way, three way, and four way switches and they all have different wiring techniques. The type of switch is dictated by the number of wires attached to it. There are two wires for two way switch, three wires for three way switch, and four wires for four way switch. Two way switches control a single light from one location and are fairly simple to wire. Two way switches and three way switches control a light from two or three different locations and are a little more complicated.

Fitting light switches. Before doing any work, make sure the electricity is turned off at the fuse box or fuse panel. When removing the wall plate and exposing the light switch, you'll know immediately what type of switch you are dealing with. It's important to replace failed switches with the same type of switch and that all of the wires be attached to the same location on the replacement switch.

Three way switches have a different terminal which is marked with a black screw and says common on the back of the switch. Locate the common wire on the existing switch and then attach it to the common terminal on the new switch first. Only then reattach the other two wires to the new switch. Four way switches have two pairs of wires and it is imperative that one pair is reattached on the top and the other pair be reattached on the bottom set of terminals. Be careful to never split pairs between a top and bottom terminal on the switch. Once the switch is safely installed and the switch cover plate attached, move the circuit breaker back to the on position. Remember to turn off the electricity before fitting light switches.
